What is Air Touch?

This new, exciting technique utilises directed air to strategically separate different sections of the hair for highlighting. The shorter layers are blown out from the longer strands, enabling a greater degree of accuracy in the colour application process. As a result, colour can be applied closer to the scalp for greater customer comfort, as teased sections can be difficult, timely and painful to take out.

Air Touch was invented in the early 2000’s by a renowned hairdresser in Russia – Vladimir Sarbashev. The drastic and popular demand for dark to light gradient colours motivated him to find a solution that could be executed in the most technical, seamless way. So he simply replaced the teasing of the hair with air from the hair dryer to separate the various strand lengths.

Benefits of the technique

1. Natural looking results

The consistent, smooth transition of colour creates the organic effect that you would get when the hair has been “sun kissed” or lightened by the sun. The final result looks soft, subtle and elegant – leaving your hair picture perfect! A blow dry is usually used a complimentary, finishing touch to provide the hair with further dimension and liveliness.

2. Customised approach to highlighting

The natural conditon, growth pattern and history of the hair are evaluated at the consultation stage to establish exactly how the technique will be adapted to produce the unique, desired look. The Air Touch is not just restricted to sun-kissed highlights as multiple colour shades can be blended and intertwined carefully to create bold, multidimensional results. A whole new world of artistry can be unlocked!

3. Less hair damage

When different layers of the hair are blown out, the colour can be applied in a precise, uniform manner with each consecutive visit to the salon. Essentially, this reduces the chances of colour or bleach overlapping, meaning there won’t really be any sections of the hair that receive a double dose of dye chemicals. This vastly diminishes the risk of chemical damage and subsequent breakage, making the Air Touch an ideal choice for customers with fine, fragile hair.

Challenges

Although a worthwhile and rewarding procedure, the Air Touch does have some drawbacks associated with time and budget limitations.

The process takes a significantly longer time than traditional highlights as it heavily depends on the amount and length of hair incorporated. The total combined time of application and processing typically takes around 3-4 hours – and even more if there are more complexities involved, or if they arise suddenly. The stylist will normally discuss this at the consultation stage and provide an approximate time frame so that the expectations can be adjusted from the start.

Also, seeing as the technique is a lot more advanced and comprehensive than the other highlighting services, it does cost a fair bit more. Again, the price heavily depends on the amount of work required, but the range is generally between £250-£350 for the year 2025.

Conclusion

Air Touch takes a truly revolutionary approach to crafting the most seamless, pristine look for the hair. It utilises carefully directed air instead of teasing/backcombing to achieve the desired colour in a way that doesn’t damage the hair and even optimizes comfort for the customer.

Despite its budget and time drawbacks, it’s undoubtedly a long-term investment as it produces unparalleled results that cannot be achieved from any other procedures.

And finally, it’s very important to first and foremost book a consultation with a highly experienced, knowledgeable hairdresser who will be able to execute the technique with surgical precision and skill. They will also know how to properly customise the procedure to suit one’s individual hair condition.
